Task

A publication on design, architecture, technology and culture. A content site should not be a grid of identical cards.

Key decision

The homepage is built around the issue: one dominant story and a typographic index instead of a feed of cards.

The wall went up in a single day in March, and by the evening the first letter had been pushed through a door that was not yet hung. It is eleven metres of board-marked concrete, a little over three metres high, and it has no window, no number and no bell.⁴ From Alder Row the Havik house is simply the place where the street stops explaining itself. The planners, to their credit, understood exactly what was being proposed. One of them wrote in the margin of the application: this is not a façade, it is a refusal.

Behind it the plan is almost embarrassingly generous. Each room borrows light from a court the size of a parking space, and the family eats, most evenings, with the doors folded away.⁵

Nobody designs the waiting room

You have said the waiting room is the most honest room in a hospital. Honest about what?

About what the institution thinks your time is worth. The operating theatre is designed around the surgeon and the ward around the nurse. The waiting room is the only room designed around nobody, so it tells you the truth. Forty chairs bolted in rows facing a wall is a sentence, and people read it perfectly well.

What is the first thing you change?

The direction of the chairs. Always. People who are frightened want to see the door they came in by and the door they will be called through, and they do not want to look at each other. That is three sightlines, and you can solve them with furniture before you touch a wall.

And the clock?

Keep it. Removing the clock is what a casino does.
